Minister for Local Government and Empowerment and Co-Chair of the Commission

Marco joined the SNP in 1998. He attended the University of St Andrews, graduating with first class Honours in International Relations. At the same time he served in many different roles in the SNP’s youth and student wings, including as their representative on the party’s National Executive Committee.

He first came to work with the SNP in 2007, becoming a parliamentary aide to Keith Brown MSP, providing research and communications support after the historic first election victory. Marco then moved to working in the SNP’s central staff focusing on environment and education issues and latterly statistical and public opinion work.

He was elected to the Scottish Parliament in the Edinburgh Central constituency in May 2011 and has served as Deputy Convener of the Equal Opportunities Committee; as a member of the Economy, Energy and Tourism Committee; and as Co-Convener of the Cross Party Group on Children and Young People. He also played a major role in the development and passage of the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Scotland) Act, which came into law in 2014.

Marco was appointed Minister for Local Government and Community Empowerment in November 2014.
